Prime Timers/Teen Game Night

The Prime Timers and teens will be having a Game Night this Saturday at the fellowship hall from 6 - 8:30. The Prime Timers will be bringing some of the games and toys they played with when they were teens and children. They want us to show off the things we play with. This is a great opportunity to interact with the Prime Timers (and play the Wii with them-this will be awesome). Let me know if you have an item you can bring such as Nintendo DS, I-Phone, MP3 player, Ipod, Guitar Hero, etc... Also we need to bring a 2-liter or some type of drink to share. The primetimers are graciously providing pizza and dessert. Please come out and support this- it will mean a lot to the Prime Timers and you will have a blast getting to know this awesome group of people at our church better.

Expressions/Scavenger Hunt Cancelled

Due to weather, Expressionsfor our teen group, (as far as I know Expressions is still happening tonight)is cancelled for tonight. If you still want a free ticket to go for Friday or Saturday night, let me know ASAP. Due to questionable road conditions the scavenger hunt, scheduled for Friday night, will be postponed to a later date. We are still having the Super Bowl Party Sunday starting at 5:00 at the home of Gene and Joyce Wharton. Parents are welcome to attend. I hope you are all enjoying your week off of school and

Expressions and Scavenger Hunt!

If you would like to go to Expressions for free on Thursday Night, call Ryan or let him know by Wednesday night. I will meet whoever wants to go to Expressions at the theater at 7:00. Also, we will be having a scavenger hunt Friday from 5:30 to 8:00.We will meet at the teen house at 5:30 and enjoy some pizza together. Please bring a 2-liter to share. We do still need some parents who are willing to drive for this event. These are always a blast and a great opportunity to bring friends. Also, don't forget about the Super Bowl Party staring at 5:00 at the Wharton's house this Sunday. Parents you are more than welcome to attend.

Awaken Student Conference

We will be meeting Friday at the Youth House @ 6:00 to go to Blennerhassett Middle School for the rally. We will arrive back at the youth house for pick up at 9:00.
If you have signed up already but have not paid you need to bring $25 with you. If you did not sign up, but still wish to go to the rally you need to bring $35.
Saturday we will meet at the youth house at 8:30AM and arrive back at 9:45 PM. We will be going to the mall food court for dinner. You will need to bring your own money for this and we may a short amount of time to do some shopping.
Sunday we will meet at the youth house at 9:00 and return around 12:00.

This Sunday, we will meet at the North Campus Gym with the 36th st. youth group to play volleyball and enjoy fellowship from 2-5. Please make plans to attend, it should be a lot of fun! Local Mission Trip

Here's the Mission Trip Run Down...

Wednesday-
*Meet in the Youth House for class at 7pm.
*After class, we will head to "Clown Golf" in Boaz, WV (don't let the putt-putt name scare you, lol). Bring a few bucks (around $3) to cover the cost of putt-putt.
*After putt-putt, we will then head back to the Youth House and have a Devo.
*After the Devo, the girls will go with Jessie to her house and Ryan and Cody will stay with the boys at the Youth House (This will be the same Wed.-Fri. night).

Thursday-
*Around 10am, we will head to nursing homes to sing to the people there.
*We will then head to the Youth House for Lunch at Noon.
*1pm-3:30pm, we will be baking cookies, making cards, and door knocking at Powell Apts.
*3:30pm-5:30pm, we will be delivering our delicious cookies.
*6pm-8pm, we will be having dinner with Elders/Members.
*We will then hang out for a while and then have a devo at around 10pm.

Friday-
*Leaving at 7am from the Youth House for Cleveland.
*Some things that we will be doing in Cleveland are...visiting and doing crafts with the children at the Cleveland Clinic, visiting the Tower City Mall, and eating at the HardRock Cafe'.
*Ariving back to the Youth House at around 10pm.

Saturday-
*Noon, we will meet at the Youth House for Lunch.
*1pm, we will leave to go to the Marietta Water Park.
*6pm-8pm, we will be having a pizza and game night with the Prime Timers.
*8pm-9pm, we will pack and clean up.
*9pm, we will have a Youth and Parent Devotional at the Youth House.
*Then the 2008 GC Local Teen Mission Trip will officially be over, and will go down in history as one of the best Mission Trips EVER!!

We just wanted to thank everyone who made it to the 6th Grade Welcome Party. We had a lot of fun, especially with the scavenger hunt. Ryan has learned his lesson and will not put "dead animals" on the list of items to bring back. For those of you who were not there, we had 4 groups who went on a scavenger hunt around town. One of the items you could get and bring back for 150 points was a dead animal. Ryan, being Ryan, thought that no one would do this and IF they did it would be some type of dead bug (i.e., fly). However, the groups returned with a dead turtle, dead mole, dead crow, freshly hit chipmunk (they say it was an accident), and the one that earned a group an extra 20 bonus points was.......drum roll please....... a dead SKUNK!!!!! One group scooped up a dead skunk and drove around with it in the back of a van for a half an hour! The van smelled horribly! I'm not sure how many cans of Glade was used that night, but it had to be a lot. We had a ton of fun and we hate that some people weren't able to make it. BUT....there is always next time. Make sure to check the calendar on the Blog for the upcoming events!

Also, I will note that the two Donald Miller books are available at Family Christian Store in a single volume called Donald Miller Greatest Hits, that was not available on Amazon. Hope this helps.

Our theme will be Transformers, and we will be talking about the transformation that God desires for our lives, our relationships and our world. • In the month of September, Teens will attend P.T. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays.
• We will have our Back-To-School Bible studies on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in September from 6:30-7:30 pm in the GC Student Center.
• Belief(s) Class—This week we will be covering Islam. Check the youth blog for a link to a podcast of these lessons. The link from last week will not work as that service was not compatible with our needs.
• A new calendar should be mailed out by the end of this week (9/16-22). It will also be available online. Watch the Youth Blog for details.

We had a great Lock-In last weekend! Special thanks to Marty and jama Davis, Chris and Erica Cameron, Ryan and Jessi Ice and Summer Cook for all their Help in making this even t so successful!
The details for “feeding the homeless” Saturday August 11^th have changed. You should receive a letter detailing the changes, or you can see Sam Butterfield for more information.
The Teens will be in Primetime tonight.
Some Teens may be asked to help get the school supplies ready for distribution during class time.
The School Supply Distribution at TAG will be August the 23^rd. Help is much needed and appreciated!

Back-To-School Bible Studies will be held on Tuesdays in August from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Student Center. We will be focusing on helping the teens stay plugged in throughout the school year so that they can be Jesus to the world that they live in.
There will be a Back-To-School game night at the student center on August the 17^th. I would like to have at least four other adult chaperones. But, would like to encourage all parents to stay and play games. Please let me know if you are able to chaperone. $2 for pizza.

LOCK -iN THIS FRIDAY August 3rd. We will start the evening by meeting at the student center at 5:30 and going to the Marietta Aquatic Center for their family night. The Cost for the entire lock in is $6. Parents, please pick your teen up by 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
On Saturday August 11^th, the teens and any other adults who would like to participate will be going to serve a meal to the homeless. We will meet at the church building at 10:00 a.m. to prepare lunch and then we’ll take the meals over. This is an idea that a couple of the teens approached me with. The Teens will be in Primetime next Wed. August 8^th.

The first Back-To-School Bible Study is August the 7^th. We will be focusing on helping the teens stay plugged in throughout the school year so that they can be Jesus to the world that they live in.
There will be a Back-To-School game night at the student center on August the 17^th. I would like to have at least four other adult chaperones. But, would like to encourage all parents to stay and play games. Please let me know if you are able to chaperone. $2 for pizza.
The School Supply Distribution at TAG will be August the 23^rd. Help is much needed and appreciated!

GCYM Update 7-25-07

· Tonight, after Wednesday night services, the teens will be going to play miniature golf in Boaz. We will caravan over there. Parents please pick your teen up at 10:00 p.m. or even better, Come Join Us for a game! Cost is $2.00

We will be having a lock-in on August 3^rd. We will start the evening by meeting at the student center at 5:30 and going to the Marietta Aquatic Center for their family night. The Cost for the entire lock in is $6. Parents, please pick your teen up by 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
On Saturday August 11^th, the teens and any other adults who would like to participate will be going to serve a meal to the homeless. This is an idea that a couple of the teens approached me with. I’m very proud of them for this and ask for your help and support in this. Please help us help them in becoming more like Jesus.

Our local mission trip was a great success. On Wed. our grew a little and on the last day, Wacky Water Day, we had 27 kids. The teens did a great job! Thank you to Ronda and Jeff Harper, Sudona Lombard, and Melissa Ogden for the wonderful dinner they prepared for us on Wed. evening. Also, thank you to Ryan and Jessie for all of your hard work and I would like to personally thank Jessie for being the "in house" female chaperone so I didn't have to sleep on the youth house floor!! Thank you girl, you're awesome!.

First Day of Day Camp

We had our first day of the day camp today and it went very well. The teens did a great job and we of course couldn't have done it without Ryan and Jessie. We are so thankful for the love and dedication that they put into all of their work with the Powell ministry. We had 14 kids today. A few from Powell, a few from Grand Central, and a few from the community. We are praying for an even larger crowd tomorrow. The teens finished the evening out with a fun time at the Marietta Aquatic Center. The rain earlier in the evening cleared most people out and we almost had the place to ourselves. Notice the last picture of Garrett, Sam and Anna. See the grief these kids give me... :).

Connections Mission Trip

The mission trip is off to a great start. On Sunday, we went to Purseley Church of Christ to worship with them. They were wonderful hosts and treated us to a picnic on a farm with great homecooking. The teens spent Monday setting up for the rest of the weeks event and last night, we had a wonderful time having dinner and playing games with the Primetimers and young adults. Parents, be proud of your kids. They did a great job preparing dinner and serving dinner to those folks. I was impressed! Thank you to the Primetimers and Young Adult group for a wonderful evening! The desserts were wonderful too! Enjoy the pictures and please keep us in your prayers this week.

Connections Mission Trip Information

If you are only attending the mission trip portion of the trip, please meet at the youth house at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday to depart for Pursely

· The Kings Island trip is $75. The rest of the trip is $15. All meals are included in the mission trip portion of the week. You will need money for four meals during the King Island trip. There will be a continental breakfast at the hotel. King Island does have a water park section also.

· We will be sleeping at the youth house. Please bring appropriate bedding and toiletries. Remember that the floors are hardwood. Air mattresses are recommended. Girls will be sleeping upstairs, guys downstairs. Girls will have access to the two restrooms upstairs. Guys will have access to the shower in the basement and the half bath on the main floor. Flip flops would be a good idea.

· Bring swimwear for the Aquatic Center trip. Girls please wear only one pieces or tankinis. Guys, no speedos.

Please remember that we are going to be working with children. Please wear decent clothing. We will trust you to know what that is. If you aren’t sure about something you should assume it isn’t appropriate.

Our Graduates '07

Brandon Eric Bucklin will graduate from Parkersburg South High School and plans to attend Ohio Valley University in the fall. Brandon and his family moved to Parkersburg from Maine during his sophomore year of high school; he credits the youth group teens with making his transition from Maine to West Virginia very smooth. Brandon has been active in the youth group and has been very studious in high school where he has focused on medical courses. He has completed three years of French, several honors classes, and attended OVU as an Early Entry student last fall; he also assisted the OVU Student Government Association in planning and hosting Midnight Madness at the SAC.
Craig Alan Dishman will graduate from Parkersburg High School and plans to attend Ohio Valley University in the fall. During high school Craig was a member of many athletic teams, including the varsity golf team, cross country, track, and tennis. Craig has also been on the Parhiscan yearbook staff and the vice president of the Senior Men’s Club. Additionally, Craig was a West Virginia Promise Scholarship recipient, elected to the 2006 PHS Homecoming Court, and received the LSIC Academic Excellence Award.

Joe Thomas (JT) Spivy graduated from Wood County Christian School and plans to attend Ohio Valley University in the fall where he will be performing with the Ambassadors. JT has been involved with the Parkersburg Actor’s Guild for many years where he appeared in Beauty and the Beast, Ten Little Indians, and A Streetcar Named Desire (just to name a few); he has also performed in productions at WCCS including April Morning, Silent Stars, and God Meant it For Good. He was president of the WCCS Association of American Christian Schools Honor Society, and he was the Junior Student Council representative. In theatrical competitions, JT placed third in Duet Acting at the AACS National Fine Arts Competition (2007) and he was the three-time winner in Duet Acting at the WVCEA State Fine Arts Competition (2005-2007). He also received the WV Writing Assessment Distinguished Award in 2005 and was selected to be the WCCS student representative to the Marietta Rotary Club luncheon in January.
Ceyleigh Marie Wooten attended Mountain Laurel High School (Home School) and plans to attend Ohio Valley University in the fall; after earning her Associate of Arts degree from OVU, Ceyleigh would like to attend the University of Cincinnati and major in Business-Marketing. Ceyleigh has participated in the West Virginia LAWS Program as well as many mission trips with the youth group (Akron, OH, Cincinnati, Wilmington, DE, New Orleans, and Mexico). During school Ceyleigh has also managed to work an average of 35 hours per week at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Some of Ceyleigh’s academic accomplishments include being listed in the 2005 edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and after scoring well on her SAT, she was permitted to take classes at OVU at the age of 15 (she has currently completed 18 hours at OVU). Additionally, Ceyleigh has earned her high school diploma a year ahead of schedule.

· We’d like to thank the youth group for their wonderful attitudes and their help last Wednesday night in getting things ready for the Honduras Yard Sale. You helped to raise roughly $1200 for the Honduras Mission Team! Parents, you should be proud of your teens.

Spring Break, etc.

Parents and Teens,

I hope you are enjoying the spring weather. I know my family is. This letter is to update and inform you of current happenings within our student ministry and of upcoming events.

First of all, I wanted to remind you that we are encouraging the teens to attend the OVU lectures with their parents this Sunday night. The speaker is Harold Shank, who is the author of the book “Up Close and Personal: Embracing the Poor”, which was studied by several of our students in relation to the Powell Ministry. His topic will be “Making Disciples of our Children”. It is our opinion that it will be extremely beneficial for parents and teens to attend this together.

Secondly, a couple of weeks ago, I gave the teens an application and commitment contract to become a part of a teen board that will help plan activities and events within our student ministry program. If your teen wants to be a part of this group, they must feel out the information sheet. Please help your child with these forms and contact me if you have any questions concerning this matter. I need these back as soon as possible.

I know that some of you are going out of town for spring break but, for those of you that are planning on being here, we have planned a few activities. I have attached a schedule of those activities. Even though the teens will be home during the day, I have planned most activities in the evening to avoid any problems with transporting them since many of you will be at work.

We are currently working on planning calendars for the spring and summer. We will get those to you as soon as possible but are waiting to be able to have the input from the teens from the teen board discussed above.

The spring retreat is scheduled for May 18^th-19th at Rippling Waters Campground. The cost will be $15. More details to come.

My parents (Keith and Lynn Ellis) live in Enterprise, AL. My pregnant wife and my daughter were visiting them this week. Yesterday (Thursday) morning, Mom, Dana and Emma went to Montgomery to help my sister shop around and get ready for her upcoming wedding. My family is all fine, and I am extremely thankful. Yet, every time I have said that prayer in the last 24 hours, I have been struck by the fact that there are those who don't get to pray that prayer. One of the teenagers who died in the High School went to the church that my Dad preaches at. My Dad was called on to tell her family that she had died. My Dad's strength continually amazes me. Another girl (who I know pretty well) was injured, but will live. The school followed the correct procedure and had the student gather in a hallway for safety. Those one one side were killed while those on the other side were buried in debris, but lived. I don't have a neat theological formula that helps explain that. I'm thankful that my family was spared that kind of loss. I hurt for the parents who sent their kids to school, never to speak to them again. I hurt for the families that are sitting in hospital rooms of their children. I hurt when I think of their confusion in relation to the God they placed their faith in. I don't think they need answers (and I'm not sure there are any answers that would help). I think they need love. I think they need the support of their faith communities. I think they need our prayer for the peace that passes understanding. Please join me in lifting this community up in prayer.

Ready for Winterfest?

o We leave at 7 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 16^th.

o We will be staying at the Royal Townhouse (same as last year).

o Students attending this event will need money for about 6 meals. Students are responsible for keeping up with this money themselves.

o A Reminder: All students owe $56 for registration and hotel. Students who also signed up for a T-Shirt and/or Concert ticket owe an additional $10 for each.

· Revolution meets at the Student Center on the 1^st-3^rd Sunday evenings of each month from 5-7 p.m.

· Teens go to P.T. on the 1^st Wednesday of each month. They attend class at the Student Center on all other Wednesdays. Teens do not attend the devotional at the building on class nights, but instead go directly to the student center at 7 p.m.

o Our current Wednesday Night Class series is called STORY. On the 2^nd week of each month, an Adult member of GC tells the class the story of their faith. On the 3^rd and 4^th Wednesdays Adam tells different episodes of the Story God’s interaction with people and the world as told in the Bible.

o Normally our Wednesday Classes are recorded and posted to the internet. We have been having some trouble with our recording equipment, but we should resume posting the lessons (with a noticeable improvement in sound quality) next week at: www.ellisadam.podomatic.com

Dates:  Feb 16-18, 2007

Location:  Gatlinburg, TN

We will be traveling by charter bus.  We will leave at 7 a.m. on the 16th from the Grand Central Church Building

We will return late on the 18th.  (difficult to estimate an exact time this far in advance)

We will be staying at the Royal Townhouse (same as last year)

The Concert this year is by Jars of Clay

Costs:

Meals—This trip will involve 6 meals.  (We will provide a light breakfast on the two mornings we are in Gatlinburg, and we are assuming that you will eat breakfast before you get on the bus on Friday).  Because Gatlinburg is a Tourist area, you should figure that each meal will be slightly more expensive than a fast food meal at home.  Students will be responsible for keeping up with their own meal money.

Our deadline for signing up for this trip is Wednesday, January 24.

Please note that this is also the deadline for taking your name off the list if you sign up.  After this point, we will have committed to pay for your Winterfest tickets and hotel room and you will still be asked to keep your financial obligation.

Missional Retreat Schedule and Childcare Meeting

Here is the schedule for the missional retreat via Eric Bucklin:

Schedule Overview:

Arrive on Friday night—Ice breaker games, snacks, devotional, and a late pizza run. The guys will be sleeping at the youth house and the girls are scheduled to sleep over at the youth minister’s house. Saturday morning meet together for a breakfast at the youth house and the day is filled with events, food, etc . . . For dinner that evening all the youth are scheduled to break away with their host families to get to know them and store their stuff at the individual homes. For Saturday night we will sleep in host families’ homes. After host family’s dinner/introduction/luggage storage we will get back together for we have events planned together until around 10PM. Then when finished all youth will spend the night at those homes to sleep well and prepare for Sunday morning classes and services the next day. The event will be ending after worshipping together with the entire body at Grand Central COC.

Don't forget that there is a meeting tonight from 7-7:30 downstairs in the church building for those of you who are helping with Sunday evening's childcare. Everyone else is to attend P.T. in the fellowship hall.

We are sending out this calendar a little late because we were waiting for confirmation on a few things relating to our missional retreat (more below). This fall we are intentionally trying to focus all aspects of our ministry towards what we hope to be doing/producing. Because of this you’ll find that some programs/events have been renamed and some events/programs have changed in terms of format. We have also added a few things. Below you’ll find a short description of each event or program. You will receive reminders that will include times, etc if they are not listed below.

· Student Center—“Youth House” just seems like a clunky term. From here on out we will refer to it as the GCYM Student Center.

· Class—these are our normal Sunday school classes. They are normally split into Jr. High and Sr. High. Both classes meet in the GCYM Student Center.

· Ethos—This is our Wednesday night teen gathering. It has been renamed to communicate it’s function. We are building a culture (or counter-culture), instilling a worldview, and building community. Class topics and format will reflect this goal. Adam will normally teach 3 week series as a part of Ethos.

· P.T.—Teens will attend P.T. on the last Wednesday of each month. This is a change from our previous schedule of the 1^st Wednesday of each month.

· Heart to Heart—Heart to Heart will now be a Bible Study. Many students have been asking for a textual study, so we are changing the format of this event to meet that need. H2H will meet on the second and forth Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. at the GCYM Student Center

· New Orleans Presentation—On Sept. 17, a presentation about the New Orleans Mission Trip will be shown as a part of the Sunday morning Worship Assembly. Adam will also be speaking on a related topic that morning.

· Revolution—This will be our Sunday Night Teen Worship Gathering. This is meant to be an entry level event, to which we are really encouraging teens to bring their friends. Praise and Worship, a short lesson (usually by Adam), and hang out time. 5-7 p.m. at the GCYM Student Center

· 5^th Quarter—Due to the expressed interest from our teens, we are tentatively planning 2 Fifth Quarters this fall on Oct 6^th and Nov. 3^rd, from (roughly) 9:30 p.m.-12 a.m. The success of these events will depend heavily on adults and teens who volunteer to help put them on.

· Missional Retreat—Normally, retreats are times of inward focus. This time we are trying something different. Our group will be hosting a weekend event for another group. More details to come. See Eric Bucklin for more info.

· Belpre Youth Rally—This annual youth rally will be held on Nov. 17-18. More details as we get them.
